Dr Cian Ó Concubhair is Assistant Professor (tenured) in Criminal Justice at Maynooth University. He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (LLB) and the University of Oxford (BCL and DPhil). He researches across criminal law, criminology, policing and news media.
Cian will present on findings from his Research Ireland-funded project, The Role of Crime & Security Journalism in Irish Democracy (ROCJOD), which is set as a pilot for the ERC application. This qualitative research is examining the impact of police/security practices of surveillance and intimidation of journalists on the power relationship between news media and the state. The presentation will also critically explore how concepts of democratic norms of transparency and accountability fit within crime & security journalism in Ireland. Finally, the presentation will assess colonial and post-colonial differences in crime & security journalism and police/security relation with news media across the Irish border.
